This work was completed in collaboration with scientists from the University of Otago and the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and supported by the Tonga Royal Navy.

On Jan. 13, 2022, the Himawari-8 satellite captured an explosive eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano, located in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga. 🌋 A tidal gauge in Nuku'alofa, the capital of Tonga, measured a one-foot tsunami wave that resulted from the blast. The major eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano on January 15th was visible from space as seen in this imagery from NOAA geostationary satellites. This view shows the Earth in true color during the day and in infrared during the night with nighttime lights shown. The plume from the volcano is easy to spot in this zoomed in view over Tonga.
